This book is essential reading for every GP. It is vital that they should know what is required under the terms of service of their NHS contract and understand how they should be paid for providing these services. It is equally important to ensure that the information provided to GPs for this purpose is kept up to date. This is why the new edition of this book is most welcome. There have been important changes to the GP contract since 1993 when the second edition was published, and this fully revised and enlarged third edition incorporates them all.
During nineteen years as Secretary of the Liverpool Local Medical Committee, I saw many cases of GPs unnecessarily experiencing difficulties simply because they did not understand what was required of them under their contract and how they should be paid for fulfilling these obligations. The past seven years as Chairman of the GMSC has reinforced this impression. I have been made only too aware of widespread ignorance among GPs of the Red Book and the GMS regulations.
This book is a vital reference document to be kept close to hand, which will help you and your staff to avoid these difficulties. Indeed, you may have to chain it down to ensure it can be found when needed!
