The fees paid for maternity medical services (MMS)are listed in the Red Book. A doctor not included in the obstetric list providing these services to his or her own patients is paid a lower level of fees than one who is included. In addition, the obstetrically approved doctor can accept women for MMS who are not on his or her ordinary list of patients. To gain admission to the obstetric list, a GP must have his or her obstetric experience approved by the local health authority, or on appeal by the Secretary of State.
