23     Temporary residents

A GP who treats a temporary resident is paid a fee:

• at a lower rate if the temporary resident expects to remain in the area for not more than 15 days from when the GP first provides treatment

• at a higher rate if the temporary resident expects to remain in the area for more than 15 days.

• a telephone fee is paid if the treatment is provided by telephone rather than in person

Payment is only made if the health authority is satisfied that treatment has actually been provided. A patient is regarded as a temporary resident if in the area for more than 24 hours but less than three months.

If the only treatment provided attracts an item-of-service fee for vaccination, immunization, contraceptive services, maternity medical services or the arrest of dental haemorrhage, this fee is paid instead of the temporary resident fee. A night consultation fee can be claimed in addition to the temporary resident fee.

Fees are only paid if the patient is a temporary resident; they cannot be claimed for those patients permanently resident in the area whom a GP wishes to accept on only a temporary basis.

Claims are made on form GMS3.
